A few small-town kids decide to make a movie on Super 8 film and end up witnessing a Government train crash. Something in the cargo escapes and the small town is soon uprooted as the U.S. Army sets up camp in order to contain the scene. The local law enforcement find themselves playing second fiddle to the Army as locals begin disappearing and dogs all over town are fleeing from someone… or something…

Len:

Am I the only one that got duped into thinking that this was going to be a scary movie? All clues point to some nasty beast escaping an Air Force train wreck, but then when push comes to shove and it’s time to confront this thing, it turns out that all it wanted was a little TLC. I’m not sure if this spoils it for anyone, but my personal feeling is that they didn’t quite know whether they wanted to make a scary movie or something closer to E.T. 2 for the kids. Most of the scenes weren’t suited for children, yet the ending would probably only satisfy kids. Still, it’s a GREAT movie in itself and you certainly can’t go wrong with a few lens flares. I just wish that they stuck to their guns and made something really scary while they had the chance.

Clarisse:

When Super 8 came out we wanted to watch it Big Screen very badly. Unfortunately life happened and we missed it. That said, after I saw the DVD, I was very sorry we didn’t get to watch it big screen.

It’s a very nice coming of age story with a good amount of Sci-Fi mixed in-between and a LOAD of action. It had a good story line, and the acting by the kids was done extremely well. Considering their age, I was very impressed and surprised.

It’s a really a must watch if you love movies. It does have something of everything for everybody and I recommend giving it a shot.

I’m still not entirely sure why they cast Chris Evans in a Marvel movie after they’ve cast him in Fantastic 4 already. The characters are probably related somehow or something. But don’t let that glitch distract you too much. The movie is fun and loaded to the brim with action and you’ll soon forget about the whole anomaly. I also liked the war aspect of the movie. It’s like a good World War 2 movie mixed with the Superhero genre. Best of both worlds! Be sure to check this one out and then get excited as the countdown to Avengers begins…

Clarisse:

This is another one of the comic heroes that I had absolutely no background on when I started watching the movie. So for people that complain its to much back story, bah humba to you! I needed the info and it was brought to life fantastically.

This was one of my favourite super hero stories to date. I loved to see where a normal, BELOW average Jo, comes in, becomes the hero and saves the world. And the end had me man!

Can I just mention that I cannot WAIT for the Avengers to come to screen!

Len:

I was in the mood for a good comedy when I watched Horrible Bosses and can admit that it didn’t disappoint. I laughed and cringed throughout the movie and didn’t feel cheated at the end of it. This is typically one of those one-thing-leads-to-another kind of movies where one event lands our heroes in hot water and just keeps escalating until the end. Good fun if you’re in the mood to be entertained.

Clarisse:

Smack in your face humour. If you are a fan of movies like Hang Over, Hall Pass, etc, then I can suggest you give this little bugger a try. It’s basically a movie about three guys that work for the bosses from hell and their plans to “rectify” the situation.

I can’t say much that won’t give the movie away, but if you are looking for a laugh and a space filler, have a shot. I did enjoy it very much. It’s a tad over the top at times, but you can look past it and still enjoy the story.

In short, this means that you can now have a machine gun shoot bullets over a wall and move it over water and After Effects will change the ricochets from dust to water splashes automatically. Oh, and it’s particle based, so you can make those bullets go anywhere you like and change the shooting pattern on the fly without it affecting the ricochets.

SA Short Film Competition

Celebrating the Art Short-Films

8 December 2011, Randburg: Filmmakers across South Africa are invited to enter the DStv Film Talent Celebration competition, launched on 2 December 2011 with a closing date of 29 February 2012. The competition focuses on celebrating the talent of very short-filmmaking in South Africa. A very short film is considered to be between three and ten minutes long.
Itumeleng Letebele, Corporate Social Investment Manager at MultiChoice suggests, “Short films are becoming popular, mostly because they are easily accessible to a wider audience via platforms such as mobile devices, tablets and online vehicles.”

The competition is open to any genre of film as long as the filmmaker believes it is a high impact offering, and is between three and ten minutes long. Only filmmakers who are South African citizens can enter their films.
An esteemed panel of judges who are industry professionals will select winners for each of the six categories: Best Production, Best Director, Best Editor, Best Sound, Best Cinematography and Best Newcomer.

The competition celebrates talent but will also see the winners walk away with cash prizes. “It is expected that this cash will be ploughed back into making more films that tell South African stories,” says Letebele.
The winners will be announced at a special gala event, where the selected short films will be screened. ”It will be an occasion for networking, appreciating talent and generally reflecting on our achievements as an industry. We will also take this opportunity to recognise the up-and-coming filmmakers from DStv’s Film Skills Development Programme,” says Letebele.

According to Lindiwe Ndebele-Koka, Director of Multimedia at the Department of Arts and Culture, “Competitions such as these stimulate competitiveness of young filmmakers. It is a good tool to identify the talent that exists in the industry. It is encouraging.”

Len:

This one was by far the better one of the three for me. The first one was fine, but got so busy towards the end that you couldn’t distinguish the good guys from the bad guys anymore and thus couldn’t really care about who blew up and who didn’t. The second one was just pure disaster, but this one renewed my faith in the franchise. Michael Bay managed to triple the amount of action, and yet made it easier to digest this time.

The only negative comment I have about this movie was that I dozed off for an hour somewhere in the middle, and when I woke up, I could still follow the entire plot as if nothing happened. That means that an entire hour of the film was actually quite unnecessary. I did watch it again to see if anything I missed was earth shattering, and nope, it wasn’t.

That said, if you watched the first two, you’ve probably seen this one on the big screen already. So all that’s left to do now is to purchase this one and stick it up on the shelf next to the other two you probably own already. You’ll most probably end up watching it a few times

Clarisse:

What a great movie! I personally love the series. It’s a great Big screen adaptation of the comic series from yonkers back. I was a little nervous for the 3rd installment. No.2 was very busy and at times a little hard to follow, but number 3 was a great stand alone movie and I enjoyed it very much.

The action scenes were done – WOW – style. And the story line was complicated and full of nice plot points. There were really a lot that they did. But then again, a 3 hour movie can get away with murder

It’s worth a watch. It was GREAT!

Overall	4.5 / 5	Really entertaining. Not enough to just watch. Have to buy and watch a few more times to soak up everything that happens.

The one thing I really enjoy in today’s 3D Animations is the wit that goes into the jokes. The animation is slick and funny enough to keep the kids entertained while the witty dialogue keeps the adults chuckling. Animation has come a LONG way since Toy Story initially hit our big screens, and some of the scenes are simply jaw dropping. Buy it for the kids (or your inner child), and you’ll achieve inner peace this festive season.

Clarisse:

My kids enjoyed this movie sooooooo much! They are great Kung Fu Panda fans and we’ve seen the 1^st one nearly a billion times already. The story is very sweet and the comedy is typical of the franchise. Witty, funny and really fluffy

The graphics are on par with all the current movies and what I particularly enjoyed was the character development. As with the first one, there was a great moral value to the movie which I love for the kids.

If you are a fan of the series or if you have kids, make a point to watch it. And it’s Christmas – BUY IT!!

The problem is that she’s still as shallow as she was the first time around, but despite that, Griffin is set on winning her heart; and doing that would mean that he would have to consider quitting his job as a Zookeeper to work with his brother as a car salesman.

When the animals at the Zoo get wind of Griffin’s intention to quit, they decide to break their code of silence and reveal to him that they can talk. After initially freaking out, he agrees to stay on and let them teach him the secrets of landing a mate in the wild.

Len:

What I enjoyed most about this movie was that I could watch it with the entire family. It was awesome to see how the kids responded to the animals and I wasn’t surprised that they asked to watch it again the next day, and the next, and the next. Even though the plot’s been done to death before, it’s the approach to it that’s fresh and makes it worth the watch. I wouldn’t buy this one for myself, but it would make a perfect gift for the younger ones. Certainly one that you could sit through again and again.

Clarisse:

Oh, My, Word! I laughed. This is a great family friendly movie that follows a poor lonely Zookeeper on his quest to win the heart of his “true love”. The plot is predictable and the story line is really not exceptionally original. But it is still very cute and the kids love it! We received a mix review from others about this movie. So it might really not be your cup of tea. If you are looking for comedy. Check. If you are looking for something nice to watch with the kiddos. Check. If you are expecting slap stick dirty humor, this is NOT it.

Hanna is a 16 year old assassin, trained by her father in the Arctic wilderness with one goal: to kill the C.I.A. operative that would like nothing more but see her dead. When she’s ready, Hanna triggers the beacon and sets in motion the events that will bring her face to face with the woman she’s been trained to kill.

Len:

I personally expected more from this film. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great movie and you ought to really enjoy it, but for me the film lost its course after Hanna escapes from the C.I.A. holding facility. I guess that the wannabe-filmmaker in me would have gone a different direction with the plot. Also, it bugged me that the first part of the film felt like a decent Hollywood blockbuster, but then switched over to what felt like a German indie film.

That said, just because it didn’t grab me by the throat doesn’t mean that it’s a bad movie. Grab this one with Thor and you should be set for a pretty decent weekend.

Clarisse:

I’ll have to agree with Len on this one. Although I don’t usually enjoy assassination movies all that much, there was enough substance in Hanna to make me watch it all the way through. This movie is like wine: either you will enjoy it, or you won’t. There’s only one way to find out though… and that’s to go and rent it and then see for yourself where you stand. Story	2.5 / 5	LOVED the part where Hanna was in the Wilderness, but it felt like a completely different movie after she escaped from the C.I.A.’s holding facility.

First Impression (Cover) vs. Payoff	3 / 5	The cover doesn’t tell you much about the movie, so there’s no huge expectation build-up.
